Derived from the tavern game of bar billiards, bagatelle became popular during the Regency period. By the late 19th-century today's familiar game was born, with a portable board and wire obstacles added.
The dancing lady that forms the base of our lamp recalls the work of Art Deco sculptors such as Jospeh Lorenzl and Marcel Bouraine, whose work was influenced by the dancers in the Ballet Russe and the Folies Bergères.
Reminiscent of the elaborately carved and gilded mirrors that graced almost every room in the Victorian home. Favourite motifs were naturalistic, incorporating shells, leaves and flowers. Glass was often brilliant cut or acid etched for further decorative effect.
